Dawn Patrol: July 29, 2009

Abby slept through the night. She was asleep by about 7:15, but we woke her up at 9:15 and gave her 4 ounces of formula. So either that did the trick, or Daddy is just lucky today. At any rate, I suspect that I will have a much nicer day today. Although it is a testament to Abby's charm that I can have a wonderful day with her despite the fact that she was up in the middle fo the previous night for two hours.

I've been feeding her solids at the beginning of her second feeding (and sometimes the third as well). It's day three of sweet potatoes, and she is getting better and better at actually swallowing some of what I give her. It is quite the chore to set everything up, feed her, and clean up the aftermath. Interesting that I used to think of the bottle as a cumbersome process. Now the bottle seems easy.

Abby also had her first real hour in day care yesterday. She and her friend went to the Y and stayed in the nursery while the Dads lifted weights. (Yes, it was great to get a workout - the first since before Mommy had the baby.) According to the nice ladies who watched her, she had a great time and was very sweet. When I arrived to pick her up, she was busy playing in the Y's exersaucer and was oblivious to me until I actually plucked her out of the exersaucer. She did give me a great big smile then, though.

We'll do our regular walk tomorrow and go back to the Y on Thursday. We are planning to take the girls swimming after we work out.

Abby had a really good nap yesterday afternoon, and she ate well for the most part. I realize more and more how little control I actually have over all of this. It is important that I feed her when she gets hungry and help her sleep when she gets tired. Yes, that's very important, but it's not sufficient to guarantee that she actually eats and sleeps well. You see, she has opinions and moods. And being sleepy and being in the mood to sleep are entirely different things. The same goes for eating. If she's into playing with a toy or watching the breeze blow through the trees, she will not eat even though she's getting hungry. I'm not going to go so far as to say that she's in control, but I'm definitely not either. I do have some advantages. I can physically move her. I have a longer attention span. I have more experience. But these are not enough to actually get her to do what I want when I want. More often, the only advantage that matters is that I can wait her out. If she's hungry but not in the mood to eat, I can simply wait until she eventually gets so hungry that she's ready. But God help me if I don't have the bottle ready.

It's almost like she's a little person or something.
