Dawn Patrol: July 3, 2009

If yesterday had a theme, it was "distraction."

Eating and sleeping were the distractions, mere interruptions in all of the glance stealing and eavesdropping. Many strange and wonderful things offered themselves to the hungry little brain, the world a smorgasbord of sensory delectation.

From the dawn sunlight peeping under the window blind to the emerald evening wink of the wireless router on the shelf in her room, the day was a heady mix of toys, milk and music; trains, airports, and nice ladies; mommy, daddy, and a new uncle; new smells, cool breezes and eye-widening firecrackers. But the most glorious thing of them all was the giant, bright, red neon Giordano's light.

Yes, little Abby had a big day, and was thrown completely off her schedule. Eating was a tiresome bore. And sleeping? Please. Fortunately, all the stimulation wore her out, so when she finally went down for the night, she slept...well...like a baby. (The proverbial baby, mind you, not a real baby. For you childless readers, real babies sleep fitfully and noisily). But it was difficult to calm her. With the experiences of the day, we are hereby altering the procedure for feeding and getting her to sleep.

For sleeping: Blinds down, door shut, lights dim, soft voice and an absolute prohibition on anything anywhere in the house that might make a noise from which a little nervous system can boot itself back up.

For eating: A quiet corner with nothing too exciting to draw little eyes and no matter what no big red neon sign.

This all seems terribly obvious now, I suppose, but these measures were not necessary just a couple of days ago.

She's growing like a weed.
