Dawn Patrol: July 31, 2009

Abby had a pretty good day yesterday. She and her friend went to the Thursday morning playgroup and had a good time. While we were there, Abby actually managed to sit up unassisted for about 45 seconds. She is getting close to having the sitting up thing figured out.

It's funny actually. She clearly has the strength to do it, and it appears that balance is the only remaining issue. Interestingly, when she's distracted by a toy or whatever, she will actually sit up for quite a long time. (This is what happened at the playgroup yesterday.) Then, suddenly realizing that she's sitting there by herself, she'll get excited, kick her legs out and fall over. So strangely enough, it seems that she can sit when she's unaware that she's sitting, but when she's self-conscious, she tips over.

I've been helping her practice sitting, pulling up and standing on a daily basis, and I have decided to change my tactics a little. Up until now, when she's sitting, I've been catching her when she falls over and putting her back into the correct position. I suspect that I have trained her to expect me to catch her. From now on, we will practice on a soft surface, and I'm just going to let her fall over. It sounds cruel (Hey, it feels cruel), but it won't hurt her. And I am hoping that since she loves to sit up, she'll learn more quickly if she comes to realize that she has to catch herself.

She had a fitful night's sleep. She didn't actually wake up until about 4:45 am, but she made a lot of fusses during the night. She woke me up at midnight, 1:00 am and again at 4:30 am. She was just tossing and turning, so I never even went into her room. She's definitely had a rough week in the sleep department. I hope that this is not a harbinger of things to come. As much for her sake as for mine.
