Dawn Patrol: July 7, 2009

Yesterday was much better for Abby. She slept a lot, and so she was much less fussy. I am getting better at recognizing her sleepy cues and was, in most instances, able to get her down soon after she started getting tired. Since she got so much sleep, I was a little worried that she wouldn't sleep well last night. There was a moment of terror when she appeared to be wide awake at 9:30 p.m., but it was only an illusion - the last throes of the insurgency if you will. She was sound asleep by 9:45, and she is still sleep as I write this (6:30 a.m.).

Her new game is to roll over onto her belly and fall asleep. Now, the phrase "babies should sleep on their backs" has been burned into our brains over and over again. So this new little bit of fun presents us with a challenge - to turn her over onto her back without waking her up. If you wake her up, she will simply roll back onto her belly and fall asleep again. It took two attempts last night before we were able to acheive the desired combination, asleep and on her back.

So, yesterday was a good day. Abby continues to work on her trill, which involves a good deal of spitting. And she continues to improve her torso control. It won't be too long before she can sit unaided. She withheld her laugh, presumably because I failed to come up with something new and funny.

A slice of life: I wanted to start recording for posterity some little tidbits of Abby's life to this point. Today, I will list the songs that Mommy and I sing to her to get her to sleep. Mommy sings, "You are the Everything" by R.E.M., "Me and Bobby McGee" made famous by Janis Joplin, "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" made famous by Otis Redding, and "You are my Sunshine." I sing "What a Wonderful World" made famous by Louis Armstrong and "Van Diemen's Land" by U2.
