Dawn Patrol: August 2, 2009

Abby had a very busy and exciting day yesterday. She met one of Mommy's friends, who is visiting in Chicago and another nice woman as well. Abby was a little nervous with the new people at first, but she soon relaxed and had quite the time playing and talking with them. All of us went out and had a nice early dinner at a restaurant on the Square. And Abby plotted unsuccessfully to get her hands on the things on the table.

She slept relatively well last night, waking up briefly at midnight and at 3:00 am. Both times she fussed for a minute or two and then went back to sleep. She woke for the day at about 5:30. We've learned to wait a few minutes to make sure she is really awake before actually going into her room to get her, and last night this tactic definitely payed off.

On the developmental front, it definitely seems that Abby has undergone a growth spirt of some sort. She is suddenly much more talkative, opinionated and engaged than she was just days ago. This might explain why she was so hungry in the early morning for the last few days. There's still no sign of a tooth, so the teething theory continues to be unconfirmed. So we are still not quite sure what's been going on with her sleeping lately. Hopefully, things will settle down soon. Little baby's that don't get regular sleep are difficult. In case you hadn't realized that.

Mommy took her to the Y yesterday, and when it was time to pick her up, Abby seriously resisted getting back into the bucket seat. She actually grabbed the side to hold herself out of it while arching her back and complaining mightily. The nice woman at the Y commented that "She's going to be a smart one," which I consider to be independent confirmation of what I have long suspected. She's started resisting the bucket seat with me as well, so we are thinking about moving her up to the converstable car seat in the next week or so. Hopefully that will be a bit more comfortable for her.
